Beauvoir, the National Cathedral Elementary School seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader to serve as the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and the Director of Beauvoir’s Specialist Team. The Director will work closely with the Head of School and the Administration to lead efforts that promote and support an inclusive community environment for all school constituents and lead Beauvoir’s specialist team. The Director of Beauvoir’s Specialist Team leads a team of educators who provide a course of co-curricular offerings to students and promotes the integration of DEIB principles across Beauvoir’s complete program. This is a 10-month administrative position that reports directly to the Head of School. The Director of DEIB and Director of the Specialist Team serves as a member of the Governing Board and sits on both the Departmental Administrative Directors (DAD) and Social, Emotional, Academic, and Spiritual Administrative (SEAS) Teams.
This is a 10-month full-time exempt position that starts August 21, 2023. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience. This position is open until filled. The Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and Director of Beauvoir’s Specialist Team will:
- Collaborate with the Head of School and Administration to provide vision, leadership, management, assessment, and strategic planning for DEIB initiatives that align with the school’s strategic goals.
- Serve as the conduit of information between the Administrative (DAD and SEAS) Teams and the Specialist Team.
- Lead and support Specialist Teachers in curricular planning, instruction, and support of students in alignment with Beauvoir’s mission and vision; plan and facilitate regular meetings with the Specialist Team; and provide regular observation and feedback to the Specialist Team in support of professional development.
- Facilitate and share best practices for enhancing inclusive excellence, engagement, and cultural proficiency at Beauvoir in all learning spaces and offices.
- Support the professional development of faculty and staff members throughout the year in coordination with curriculum committees and the Administration.
- Be well-versed and have experience in leading conversations with teachers, students, and families to support the work of DEIB.
- Collaborate with the Social, Emotional, Academic, and Spiritual Administrative Team (SEAS) to support Beauvoir’s ongoing work to design and create culturally relevant classrooms and learning spaces.
- Enhance Beauvoir’s culturally rich curriculum, reviewing themes and topics throughout the year, and facilitating the implementation of Beauvoir’s DEIB Curriculum.
- Assist in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of new employees at the appropriate or relevant times during the school year.
- Lead the direction and liaise with teacher and parent/caregiver committees focused on DEIB work, including Mosaic, Kaleidoscope, and the Faculty and Staff Affinity groups.
- Design and coordinate parent/caregiver education seminars, presentations, and book studies.
- Role model kindness, respect, responsibility, and honesty in all interactions and communications.
- Manage and communicate so that student, family, and faculty concerns are addressed and needs of all constituent groups are fairly met in a timely and tactful manner.
- Attend monthly, evening Board meetings and annual Board retreat, and provide regular written reports for the distributed Board packet.
- Honor the mission and vision of Beauvoir as it relates to all aspects of the academic, spiritual, social, and emotional program. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in education or counseling preferred.
- Teaching and/or consulting experience in elementary grades preferred.
- Experience working with students who represent many diverse backgrounds and demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) best practices.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated mature judgment and discretion; demonstrated confidentiality and composure under pressure and in all situations involving students, families, and colleagues.
- A strong ability to organize work, set and adjust priorities, meet deadlines, and execute multiple concurrent tasks; demonstrated ability to anticipate needs and respond accordingly, and to perform with an appropriate degree of initiative.
- Ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders, with specific attention to encouraging parent/caregiver and community involvement.
- Embodiment of the Beauvoir Life Rules in all aspects of employment and interactions with school stakeholders. 9. Demonstrated ability to support, uphold, and promote the Beauvoir Core Values of Childhood, Collaboration, Creativity, Curiosity, and Courage.
- Joy in leading, teaching, learning, and working with children.
- Ability to be flexible and to perform other duties assigned by the Head of School.
- Strongly preferred but not required: prior experience as a Director of Diversity and Inclusion in either a school, non-profit, or corporate environment.
