Custodian Supervisor

Job Summary

The Supervisor of Custodial Services provides leadership, direction, and hands-on supervision of the school’s day and night custodial teams. This position is responsible for assisting the Faculties Manager with organizing, coordinating, and planning a comprehensive custodial and quality control program that ensures a clean, safe, well-maintained, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

In collaboration with the Facilities Manager, school administrators, and the PECF, the Supervisor assists in developing and implementing custodial procedures, performance standards, schedules, and priorities consistent with the mission and high expectations of an independent school community. The Supervisor serves as a key operational leader, fostering accountability, professionalism, and consistency across multiple shifts while modeling a service-oriented approach reflective of Beauvoir’s mission and Life Rules.

Hourly Range: $26.00 – $35 per hour depending on education and experience.

Work Schedule

This position is scheduled to begin work between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with flexibility required to ensure meaningful daily engagement with both day and evening custodial crews. Occasional schedule adjustments, evenings, weekends, and emergency response may be required to support school operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

  • Directly supervise, train, and support day and evening custodial staff to ensure consistent service delivery across all shifts.
  • Provide daily on-site leadership presence with both crews, facilitating communication, coaching, and performance management.
  • Assign rotational work zones, monitor productivity, and ensure coverage for routine operations, special events, and other needs after regular school hours.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities to ensure custodial standards, cleanliness, and presentation are met or exceeded.
  • Address performance concerns promptly and professionally, documenting issues and collaborating with Human Resources and the Facilities Manager when appropriate.
  • Serve as a point of contact for custodial-related concerns, ensuring timely and professional resolution.
  • Maintain effective communication across shifts to ensure consistency, continuity, and responsiveness.

Collaboration and Program Development

  • Work closely with the Facilities Manager, school administrators, and PECF to develop and implement custodial standards and operational priorities.
  • Assist in planning for school events, community functions, and seasonal or special projects requiring custodial support.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by recommending process enhancements, new equipment, or updated practices aligned with industry standards.

Custodial Operations and Quality Control

  • Plan and coordinate periodic cleaning schedules for classrooms (deep cleanings as requested), offices, common areas, restrooms, athletic spaces, and special-use facilities.
  • Implement and oversee a comprehensive quality control program, including inspections, faculty and custodial staff feedback sessions, checklists, and corrective action plans.
  • Ensure timely purchasing, proper use, storage, and maintenance of custodial supplies, equipment, and tools; monitor inventory and assist with ordering.
  • Support preventative maintenance efforts by identifying custodial and facility-related issues and reporting them to the Facilities Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, regulatory standards, and school policies related to custodial operations.
  • Train or when possible, provide training to custodial staff on proper cleaning techniques, chemical handling, equipment operation, and safe work practices.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and professionalism within the custodial team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional coursework or certifications in facilities management, custodial operations, or supervision strongly preferred.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in custodial services, building operations, or facilities maintenance, including at least three years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising custodial staff across multiple shifts or buildings.
  • Strong knowledge of custodial best practices, cleaning methods, equipment, and chemicals used in institutional or educational settings. Proven ability to plan, organize, and manage staff, schedules, and service expectations effectively.

  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency with common computer applications, including word processing and shared calendars.
  • Professionalism: Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality and composure under pressure.
  • Reliability: Consistent and punctual attendance; able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Compliance: Adherence to all policies and procedures outlined in the Beauvoir Faculty & Staff Handbook.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to adapt to changing circumstances and work hours, as needed.

  • Physical Demands: Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, and stooping.
  • Manual Dexterity: Frequent grasping, repetitive hand movements, and fine motor skills.
  • Physical Strength: Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 70 pounds.
