School Life

Beauvoir Life Rules

Beauvoir believes that a solid educational foundation includes learning about character, ethics and what it means to be a member of a community. Beauvoir’s children share in the rich life of the Washington National Cathedral community. The School’s Episcopal identity reinforces Beauvoir’s belief in education that promotes responsibility and develops character.

Beginning with the youngest students, Beauvoir’s Life Rules of kindness, respect, responsibility and honesty are reinforced in daily class discussions and reflected in all-school community meetings, assemblies and regular chapel programs. Values are discussed with parents at workshops and actively shared through school-wide service projects, chapel and classroom activities. The social curriculum at Beauvoir is as important at the academic curriculum and teaches an important set of skills our young students will need to succeed in life. Good character education is not only taught, but modeled by the entire adult community at the School. At Beauvoir, students see adults following the Life Rules in their own interactions with each other and results in a school community that is safe, where children enjoy learning and the development of a child's character is of the utmost importance.

In addition to the Life Rules, Beauvoir uses the Responsive Classroom approach school-wide. Responsive Classroom is a way of teaching that emphasizes social, emotional and academic growth in a strong school community. It is based on the premise that children learn best when they have both academic and social-emotional skills and feel like they are a known member of the classroom community. The Responsive Classroom approach consists of a set of practices that build academic and social-emotional competencies.
