Anna Carello, Ed.D., Associate Head of School, has accepted a position at Collegiate School in New York City, effective July 1, 2021. Dr. Carello will join Collegiate’s Head of School, David S. Lourie, as Associate Head of School for Academics. Collegiate is an all-boys, K-12 school located on the Upper West Side of New York City and the oldest independent school in the country, founded in 1628.
This professional opportunity affirms Dr. Carello’s strengths as a talented educator and administrator, and Beauvoir’s reputation for cultivating leaders of the highest caliber. In addition, Dr. Carello’s move to NY enables her to be closer to family.
“In my partnership with Anna over the past three years at Beauvoir,” Head of School Cindi Gibbs-Wilborn shares, ”I have found a trusted confidante, strategic thought partner, creative ally, lifelong colleague, and true friend. One of my most beloved professional mentors once shared with me a quote that remains framed in my home office to this day: ‘Remember how far you’ve come, and you won’t have to rely on a destiny for your future. It will come on your own.’ Anna’s 17 years as an educator and 5-year journey at Beauvoir have paved the way for this destiny and her legacy will long be remembered. Her tireless dedication to Beauvoir’s early childhood curriculum; stalwart commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and focused development of our state-of-the-art technology program are just a few of her many accomplishments. Dr. Anna Carello will be deeply missed.”
Since 2015, Dr. Carello has served Beauvoir with dedication and distinction in fulfilling the school’s mission. As Associate Head of School, Dr. Carello’s work includes advising the Head of School and Governing Board on curriculum and strategic planning; leading academic and technology teams; managing recruitment, professional development, onboarding, and mentoring programs; and completing Beauvoir’s 5-member Outplacement Team. Prior to Beauvoir, Dr. Carello was an educational leader at the School District of Philadelphia, PA and Pine Crest School in FL.
A consummate professional with multiple awards and recognitions, Dr. Carello has been both presenter and panelist at numerous academic conferences and institutes. In addition to earning her Ed.D. in educational and organizational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Carello holds a Graduate Specialist Certificate in Mind, Brain, and Teaching from Johns Hopkins University; M.Ed. in administration, planning, and policy from Boston University; and a B.A. in history and Spanish from Marquette University.
Beauvoir will conduct a nationwide search for the next Associate Head of School. In the meantime, Holly Joyner, Ph.D., Director of Guidance and member of the Outplacement Team, will serve as Interim Associate Head of School for the 2021-2022 academic year, effective July 1, 2021.
A well-known face in the community, Dr. Joyner’s background, education, and experience combined with her knowledge of Beauvoir and relationships with faculty and students, put her in an ideal position to serve in this role. Head of School Cindi Gibbs-Wilborn recalls, “Holly has been involved with every aspect of Beauvoir life during her 25-year tenure. Her many former hats range from ABC educator, associate teacher, grade level team leader, and liaison to the Close and area schools, to faculty representative to the Governing Board, advancement officer, admissions tester and outplacement leader and, of course, trusted guidance counselor, colleague, and parent. In 2007, we partnered as co-acting Heads of School. To have an opportunity to work with Dr. Joyner again in a similar capacity is an exceptional honor.”
Dr. Joyner earned multiple degrees—Ph.D., M.A., and B.A.—in developmental psychology from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC Chapel Hill, she was a research assistant, taught undergraduate courses in psychology and child development, and was assistant gymnastics coach. Since then, Dr. Joyner has received professional awards and honors, published articles, and made presentations in child development, learning styles, school readiness, and social engagement. At Beauvoir, Dr. Joyner continues to be an advocate for students and available for parents to help strengthen the school-family partnership so highly valued at Beauvoir.
The leadership, acumen, and commitment Dr. Joyner brings to the Beauvoir community will provide a strong bridge during Dr. Carello’s transition towards a bright future for Beauvoir. The school community extends congratulations to these stellar Beauvoir educators and administrators.
