A Coeducational School | Early Learners to Third Grade

Mrs. Cindi Gibbs-Wilborn

Mrs. Gibbs-Wilborn was thrilled to return in July 2018 as Beauvoir’s Head of School. Cindi is a very familiar face on the Close, having begun her independent school career as an administrator at Beauvoir. Over the course of her twelve-year tenure at Beauvoir, she served as the division director for first through third grade and interim head of school during the head of school’s five-month sabbatical in 2007; led auxiliary and special programs; and founded and directed the Beauvoir Center for Teaching and Learning, which provided seminars, courses, workshops, speaker series, faculty-in-residence programs, and other professional growth opportunities for educators, parents, caregivers, and students from around the country.

Prior to coming to Beauvoir, Mrs. Gibbs-Wilborn spent five years as head of school at Hanahau’oli School, a JK-6 school of over 200 students in Honolulu, Hawaii. In that capacity, she was responsible for developing and advancing the vision of the school, working in close collaboration with its board of trustees. During her tenure, she led faculty in reviewing and revising curriculum to ensure continuity, alignment, and meaningful and memorable learning experiences; developed a customized, continuum-based process for student progress reports; and built a faculty evaluation process that was rooted in growth and flexibility, while adhering to clear standards. Other accomplishments included the renovation of an outdoor learning and play space; completion of the school’s reaccreditation; and a significant increase in the school’s annual fund.

Before her work in Hawaii, Cindi served as head of lower school at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she led a division of 600 students in TK-5. Under her leadership, the division added new world language options, piloted the use of iPads at various grade levels, and adopted the Responsive Classroom approach.

Mrs. Gibbs-Wilborn is an active member of several industry associations and a 2018 Klingenstein Fellow for Heads of School at Columbia University’s Teachers College. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has also conducted doctoral work in curriculum and instruction at the University of Maryland. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband (Larry), teenage twins (Evie and Tyler), and Jack-Rat Terrier (Jewel).
